13th Sanya Dragon Heads-raising Festival at Dongtian Park Feb 27
The 13th China (Sanya) Dragon Heads-raising Festival will be held at Sanya’s 5A scenic spot, Dongtian Park (三亚大小洞天旅游区) on February 27th, 2017.
According to folk legend, the second day of the second lunar month of of the Chinese lunar calendar is the very day that the dragon king is said to ‘raise his head’ (or awaken) with the sound of rumbling thunder, a sign of the coming rains that will revitalize the earth. Around this time, the earth is bursting with life, grass and trees are beginning to sprout and farmers are getting ready to till the fields.
As Hainan is surrounded by the sea, which is thought to be the home of dragons, the worship of dragon is extremely important here. Every coastal village on the island has a temple for people to worship dragons to ensure good a catch and safe sea voyages.
At Dongtian Park in Sanya, this day will follow a series of folk activities, including the South China Sea Blessing Ceremony, China Traditional Cultural Photography Exhibition, the Dongtian Temple Fair and the Dongtian Lecture, which are bound to be a cultural feast for all.
About Dongtian Park
Dongtian Park is one of the first national 5A tourist attractions. Originally established during the Southern Song dynasty (1187 AD), Dongtian Park is the most southern centre for Taoist culture in China.
The site incorporates fifty different scenic spots with beautiful beach front and mountain scenery as well as cultural and educational activities.
There is a restaurant near the main entrance and a boutique beach front hotel within the park.
