Clipper 2017-18 Race Sanya Stopover: Timetable of events and tourism activities
Laying on the southern tip of Hainan Island, the tropical paradise of Sanya, the only Chinese destination to be chosen as one of the 52 places to visit by the New York Times this year, will be the first of two Chinese Host Ports on the Clipper 2017-18 Race route with teams due to arrive in Sanya from 21-25 February 2018.
Boasting picture perfect white sandy beaches lined with coconut palms, pristine waters, a balmy climate and 300 days of sunshine per year, China’s idyllic holiday destination lives up to its reputation as the ‘Hawaii of China’.
After racing some 4,300 nautical miles from Australia to Sanya, China, during Race 7: The Forever Tropical Paradise Race, the Clipper Race crew, visitors and members of the public will enjoy an action-packed timetable of events and tourism activities:
The culturally diverse city offers a warm welcome to visitors and offers something for everyone; watersports enthusiasts flock to sail, windsurf and surf on the South China Sea, adventurers can explore lush rainforests, and foodies can sample Sanya’s local delicacies including seafood hotpots, Li five-coloured rice, Hui sour fish soup, Li Shanlan liquor and fresh coconut water.
Sanya’s rich heritage, which dates back thousands of years, will impress visitors wanting to immerse themselves in local history. Must-see attractions include the iconic statue of Guanyin in Nanshan Temple which stands at 108 meters tall, Tianya Haijiao (The End of the Earth), Daxiaodongtian (Dongtian Park), Luhuitou Park, and Wuzhizhou Island.
More modern landmarks include Phoenix Island, dubbed the Oriental Dubai, which is an artificial archipelago in Sanya’s bustling centre. After watching the sunset on Sanya Bay beach, Phoenix Island comes to life with a spectacular light show on its five iconic buildings.
The Clipper Race fleet with berth in Sanya’s Serenity Marina during the stopover, which is a hub of marine activity regularly hosting major regattas including the Round Hainan Regatta. With direct access to South China Sea, Sanya Serenity Marina’s impressive facilities include a dedicated hotel, sailing school, marina club house and race offices.
