The 1st International Symposium on Coral Reefs (Hainan) will be held in Sanya from January 9th to 12th, 2017.


A group of coral reef experts and scholars from home and abroad, including the United States, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Israel, Hong Kong, and Taiwan will take part in the forum and brainstorm on five main topics as follows:


1. Coral Reef Biology(taxonomy, development, disease)

2. Ecological Restoration of Coral Reef and Preservation for Coral Islands

3. Coral Reef Ecosystem Monitoring and Assessing

4. Coral Reef Spatial Design and Industrialization( tourism, traditional fishery)

5. Popular Science and Education for Coral Reef Ecology(public welfare, diving, aquarium)


The forum is co-organized by Oceans and Fisheries Bureau of Sanya and Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve, and supported by such organizations as Pacific Society of China, Taiwanese Coral Reef Society, Chinese Academy of Fishery Science, Hainan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Department of Ocean and Fisheries of Hainan Province, Hainan University and China Youth Development Foundation.


The event will serve as a platform bringing together coral reef scientists, experts, and environmentalists to seek ways to study the current state and problems as well as sustainable development of coral reef in nationwide and worldwide, with focus on coral reef protection and the future of oceans from scientific perspective.


Sanya’s clear water, soft sand, and extensive coral beds along its coastline are a natural tourist attraction. The local government in recent years has been dedicated to protecting these vital coral reef ecosystems. At present, the Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve covers an area of 85 square kilometers that includes three sections in Yalong Bay, Luhuitou Peninsula – Yulin Bay and the East & West Islets.
