9th Round Hainan Regatta 2018 comes to a successful conclusion
The 9th Country Garden Cup Round Hainan Regatta came to a successful conclusion on April 1st, 2018.
The 2018 race was another stepping stone for the island of Hainan towards becoming China’s sailing capital. Created in 2010 by the Chinese Yachting Association (CYA) and benefiting from strong backing by the government, the Round Hainan Regatta has become a premier sailing race in China following several stages of expansion. The race forms part of the plan to place the island on the world sailing map and to develop sailing-related business in the region.
The 2018 Round Hainan Regatta kicked off at the Sanya Serenity Marina on March 25th. Around 400 sailors from 42 teams participated, making this year’s event the one with the highest number of participants ever. Participants came from around the globe to take part in the domestic high-level competition. Racers stoped at Lingshui County, Wanning City, and Haikou City during course of the 820-nautical-mile journey.
The scope of the Round Hainan Regatta has expanded rapidly since its inception, and the new competitions and events have demonstrated a high level of professionalism in terms of race organization, competition agenda, and sailing teams.
Over the past eight years, the regatta has continued to grow and has had a major impact on Hainan in many domains beyond sports, including the economy, culture, and tourism. Now in its ninth year, a year that also marks the 30th anniversary of the elevation of Hainan Island to provincial status as well as the establishment of the Hainan Special Economic Zone, the sailing event is well-positioned for future expansion in addition to making further contributions to the province’s economic growth.
