Sanya hosts press conference for arrival of Clipper Race fleet
On February 23rd, 2018, a press conference was held at the Sanya Serenity Marina to welcome the arrival of the Clipper 2017-18 Race fleet in Race 7: The Forever Tropical Paradise Race. It was a 4,300-nautical mile race from the Whitsunday Islands, Australia to Sanya, China.
The press conference was attended by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, founder of the Clipper Round-the-World Yacht Race; William Ward, CEO of the Clipper Race; Xu Zhenling, Vice Mayor of the Sanya Municipal Government; and Wang Kehong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Sanya Municipal Government. Skippers of the teams PSP Logistics, Dare to Lead, Qingdao, and Sanya Serenity Coast, as well as some of the ambassadors of Sanya Serenity Coast, were also present at the press conference.
On behalf of the Sanya Municipal Government and the people of Sanya, Ms. Xu Zhenling expressed her heartfelt congratulations to PSP Logistics, Dare To Lead, and Qingdao for their incredible achievements in Race 7. She then extended her warmest welcome to the Sanya Serenity Coast team after their arrival in the team’s homeport.
Ms. Xu said that the Clipper Race is another world-renowned sailing event in which Sanya now plays a part, alongside the Volvo Ocean Race and the Youth Sailing World Championships. These events are helping build Sanya’s reputation as an international sailing destination. During the Sanya stopover, the Clipper Race crew, visitors, and members of the public will enjoy an action-packed timetable of events and tourism activities. Ms. Xu expressed her hope that visitors will enjoy Sanya’s beautiful scenery and unique charm.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, founder of the Clipper Race, praised the outstanding performance of the Sanya Serenity Coast team and Sanya’s ambassadors during the race. “Their excellent sailing skills and good communication skills have all made the Sanya Serenity Coast more competitive, and have earned them praise in the Clipper Race fleet,” he said. He added that the Clipper Race will continue to cooperate with the Sanya government to help develop Sanya into a world-class stopover for the race.
Skipper Wendy Tuck and her crew crossed the finish line at 2:21 a.m. on Friday, February 23rd local time and claimed fourth place in Race 7: The Forever Tropical Paradise Race.
Wendy was proud of coming back to the team’s homeport. “It has been exciting and incredible — there were fireworks at the finish line and we were greeted by a lion dance,” said Wendy, who added that Sanya is a charming city and she will take her time in enjoying the city’s sights. She said that she is really looking forward to the in-port race on March 1st, which she thinks will be a great chance to enjoy Sanya’s beautiful shoreline.
PSP Logistics Skipper Matt Mitchell, Dare To Lead Skipper Dale Smyth, and Qingdao Skipper Chris Kobusch shared their sailing experiences from Race 7, a tough and challenging 4,300-nautical mile race from the Whitsunday Islands, Australia to Sanya. They noted that it was their first time to Sanya and that they are really looking forward to seeing more and enjoying all the activities the city has to offer.
Sanya’s partnership with the Clipper Race helps the city promote its brand profile and push the development of water sports. The partnership also helps further enhance the city’s strategy of combining sports and tourism as a long-term development plan.
