Father of China hybrid rice gives speech to the Africans
The first China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo opened in Changsha City, Hunan Province on June 27th, 2019. Yuan Longping, China’s renowned rice scientist, gave a 2-minute congratulatory speech on the day and received great praise nationwide.
Known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice,” Yuan is known for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s and for his breakthrough achievements in developing the genetic materials and technologies essential for breeding high-yielding hybrid rice varieties.
In 2018, a new hybrid rice variety ( Chaoyou 1000) was cultivated at a test demonstration field of the Haitang Bay Rice Paddy National Park in Sanya. This super hybrid rice achieved an average yield of 1,065.3 kg per mu on May 22nd, 2018, which broke the record for Hainan’s rice yield per unit area. The cultivation of super hybrid rice is believed to enough to safeguard the country’s self-sufficiency in grain production.
Hainan’s tropical climate and rich biological resources have made it an important national center for seed propagation. Each winter, more than 7,000 domestic agricultural scientists and workers are busy at the off-season breeding centers. Statistics from the Hainan provincial off-season breeding administration show that 19,950 crop varieties, or about 70 percent of the country’s new crop varieties, have been cultivated in the past 70 years in the tropical island province, which is building a global animal and plant resources center as part of its free trade zone development plan.
Sanya Haitang Bay Paddy Field National Park has been chosen as the venue for the exhibition of new rice varieties and new technologies at the annual China (Sanya) International Forum on Rice since 2017.
