Sanya-London, Hainan's 1st intercontinental air route to open on July 12, 2018
China Southern Airlines will open a direct air route connecting Sanya and London on July 12th, 2018, the company announced during a press conference at the Shanhaitian Resort Sanya, Autograph Collection on June 13th, 2018.
Serviced by an Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft, the flights will depart Sanya at 1:15 p.m. Beijing time every Thursday and Sunday. The return flight will leave London at 10:10 p.m. local time on those same days.
This will be Hainan’s first regular intercontinental route since the island province expanded its visa-free policy to attract more tourists on May 1st, 2018.
According to the Exit-entry Administration Bureau of the Public Security Department of Hainan Province, as of June 1st, Sanya received a total of 19,115 inbound visitors since Hainan’s new visa-free travel policy took effect on May 1st, 2018.
Currently, there are 24 international and regional flights linking Sanya to countries including Thailand, Russia, South Korea, and Kazakhstan.
In April, the Chinese central government announced its decision to support Hainan in developing the island into a pilot free trade zone, and gradually exploring and steadily promoting the establishment of a “free trade port with Chinese characteristics.”
The new Sanya-London direct flights will be launched this July. The new route is the result of years of Hainan tourism promotional work in the UK; the flights will strengthen relations between Sanya and London, facilitating more opportunities for development in the fields of trade, education, culture, and tourism in both regions. The new route will also help transform Hainan Island into an international pilot free trade zone by 2020.
