Sanya sees 1m int'l/regional tourists via its airport in 2019
As of November 16th, 2019, passenger throughput at the international terminal at Sanya Phoenix International Airport reached one million for the year, a record high for the airport since its opening.
The airport made strides in the expansion of its international flight routes, boosting the number of inbound visitors from overseas tourist markets. A series of national policies such as the “Belt and Road” Initiative, the Hainan Free Trade Zone (Port), and visa-free access for visitors from 59 countries has also helped promote the city’s booming air travel market. At present, Sanya has 40 air routes to 12 countries and regions, connecting 35 cities.
In recent years, the Sanya airport has taken measures to improve devices and facilities, aiming to deliver an experience that exemplifies the warm hospitality for which Sanya is known.
The Sanya airport has worked with Wuzhizhou Island to construct a cultural project called “The Eye of Ocean” in the arrival hall of Terminal 1. In addition, construction on a “Culture Corridor” renovation project in the air corridor linking the airport to Phoenix Airport Railway Station is underway. The external design of the “cultural corridor” is shaped like a cruise ship, featuring tropical elements, blue waves, and dolphins. The project is set to be completed by the end of 2019.

In service of the tropical boutique resort city’s aspiration to grow into a global tourism destination, the Sanya airport has worked to improve its overall support facilities at the airport’s international terminal building, by adding four security inspection channels, six check-in counters, and two sets of 40-meter T-type baggage carousels, with the aim of further improving the travel experience for international passengers.
The Sanya airport is taking its airport’s safety and service quality to the next level. The airport will make use of fifth-freedom aviation rights and continue to seek out more opportunities to open more international air routes with airline companies and air charter vendors, with the goal of turning Sanya City into an international tourism consumption center.
